Inala — Brisbane's Most Unique Suburb and Its 70-Year-Old Homes
Inala is unlike any other suburb in Brisbane — or Australia. Established in 1946 by World War II ex-servicemen as "Serviceton," it was taken over by the Queensland Housing Commission in 1950 and transformed into Brisbane's largest satellite town at a cost of £20 million.
What makes Inala truly extraordinary is how it was built. Facing a severe post-war housing shortage and a scarcity of local building materials, the Queensland Housing Commission did something unprecedented — they imported prefabricated homes from France, Sweden, Holland and Italy, shipping them flat-packed to Brisbane along with European construction workers to assemble them. The result was a suburb of Modernist Revival homes with Art Deco elements, unlike anything else built in Queensland.
Those homes are now 70+ years old. With first home buyers and investors flooding in — a thorough building and pest inspection has never been more important.
Location & History
22km southwest of Brisbane CBD. Established 1946 as Serviceton by WW2 veterans. Renamed Inala in 1953. Queensland's largest ever Housing Commission satellite town.
Property Profile
An established, multicultural suburb built on 1950s ex-Housing-Commission stock — predominantly post-war timber and lowset fibre-cement homes now well over half a century old, alongside newer infill builds. The older homes bring asbestos, restumping, wiring and timber-pest checks, with termites a constant risk on ageing timber.
Housing Types
Predominantly 1950s–1960s Housing Commission homes including European prefabricated builds. Modernist Revival and Art Deco style. Many since extended, renovated or clad. All 60–75 years old.
Community
A vibrant, multicultural community led by a strong Vietnamese community and an influx of young first home buyers and investors drawn by outstanding value and proximity to the CBD.
Why Inala Homes Require a Specialist Inspector
Inala's unique construction history creates inspection challenges you won't find in any other Brisbane suburb. Here's what buyers need to know.
What We Check on Every Inala Property
Our QBCC-licensed inspectors are experienced with older Brisbane homes and know exactly what to look for in Inala's unique housing stock.
Structural Assessment
Full structural inspection including foundations, walls, roof framing and sub-floor — critical in 70-year-old homes where movement and deterioration are common.
Termite & Timber Pest
Inala's European prefabricated timber was vulnerable to termites from day one. We conduct a thorough timber pest inspection covering termites, wood borers and wood decay fungi.
Asbestos Awareness
Homes built before 1990 commonly contain asbestos-containing materials. We identify suspected asbestos materials and recommend specialist testing where required.
Renovation Compliance
Many Inala homes have been extended or renovated over the decades. We assess the quality and apparent compliance of additions, extensions and alterations.
Moisture & Water Damage
Decades of Queensland weather take their toll. We check for water ingress, rising damp, subfloor moisture and drainage issues throughout the property.
Electrical & Plumbing (Visual)
Original 1950s electrical and plumbing systems in unrenovated Inala homes pose serious safety risks. We flag aged systems requiring urgent attention.
Your Inala Inspection, Done Personally by the Owner
When you book an inspection in Inala, you deal with me — Lachlan Pascoe, the owner of Admired Building & Pest Inspections. I personally carry out every inspection, so the person who walks your property is the same person who writes your report and takes your call afterwards.
I’m QBCC-licensed with over 20 years’ hands-on experience across carpentry, building and timber pest control. That trade background means I know exactly how the homes around Inala are built — and where the problems tend to hide.
No subcontractors and no rushed checklists — just a thorough, independent inspection and a clear report you can actually act on.

What Our Clients Say
FAQ — Inala Building & Pest Inspections
Why are Inala homes so unique compared to other Brisbane suburbs?
Inala was built from 1950 using prefabricated homes imported from Europe — France, Sweden, Holland and Italy. This was unprecedented in Queensland and created a suburb of Modernist Revival homes with Art Deco elements unlike anything else built here. Those homes are now 70+ years old and require experienced inspectors who understand their unique construction.
Do Inala homes contain asbestos?
Potentially yes. Homes built before 1990 in Queensland commonly contain asbestos-containing materials, particularly in fibrous cement sheeting, eaves, wet area linings and extensions. Our inspectors identify suspected asbestos materials and recommend specialist testing where needed.
What are the most common issues found in Inala homes?
Given the age of the housing stock, common issues include termite activity and timber damage, suspected asbestos materials, non-compliant renovation work, aged electrical and plumbing systems, subfloor moisture and structural movement. Our inspections cover all of these comprehensively.
Is Inala a good area to buy in?
Inala is one of Brisbane's fastest-growing suburbs, attracting strong interest from first home buyers and investors. As with any purchase of an older home, a thorough building and pest inspection is essential to understand exactly what you're buying.
How quickly will I receive my report?
Same day as the inspection in most cases. Inala's a fast-moving market — we understand you're working to tight deadlines and we deliver.
