Tivoli — Hillside Homes on Ipswich's Old Coal Country
Tivoli rises on the hills just north of the Bremer River, about 4.8 kilometres north-east of the Ipswich CBD in the City of Ipswich. First sold as farmland in the early 1860s, it takes its name from the Tivoli coal mine, and mining shaped the suburb through the late 1800s — the Abermain Colliery and its coke ovens, and a tramway that once carried coal all the way to the Mount Crosby weir. Mine owners built substantial homes here, several of them now heritage-listed, and the much-loved Tivoli Drive-In remains one of only a handful left in Queensland.
